How to Make an Offer on that Painting You Love
Most artists want two things…to have their art go home with and be cherished by the people who love it the most, and to have the means to continue working–and they’ll be willing to make that happen through terms of negotiating the price. As a collector, it’s important to understand a few things that will make approaching an artist about a mutually beneficial price easier.
Negotiating the price on a piece of artwork is the norm, not the exception.
Not only is negotiating prices on artwork the norm, but also EXPECTED. Don’t hesitate to approach the artist about finding a price that works for both parties. Usually the set price is the starting one, but as an artist, I’d be willing to negotiate up to 20-25%, depending on the piece. On average, a respectful discount will hover between 10 and 20%, but that’s ultimately up to the artist. An easy way to start the conversation is asking about any promotions, sales, or discounts up for grabs. Be upfront about what you’d be willing to pay and see how that will play into what they are willing to consider. Also, keep in mind that prolific artists who create a high volume of work may be more willing to negotiate to keep the ball rolling, while artists who are more meticulous may have more static pricing…but it’s never out-of-place in the art world to ask!
Artists are looking for ways to make their art business sustainable.
Artists generally want to sell their work for multiple reasons. Although I become very attached to my paintings and would keep them all given the choice, I’ve learned that my work and I do better when we’re “out there”. When I sell pieces, I buy myself more time and space to generate fresh concepts and new series. Having my paintings in collectors’ homes not only brings them joy, but also fresh eyes paying attention to what I have to say. The magic happens at the intersection of my work and its appreciators, and I’ve learned to appreciate those who become collectors and make it possible for me to continue my life’s passion. When approaching an artist about an offer, recognize your important role in their career as you offer both financial support and wider recognition.
Finally, if you ever see a painting of mine that hits home, make an offer and take it home!
On my website, I’ve added a “make an offer” button on all my pieces. Feel free to go that route, or directly contact me to discuss the price.
